FIRS shuts HFP Engineering, others over tax debts

Akinpelu Dada The Federal Inland Revenue Service on Wednesday shut the operational headquarters of HFP Engineering Nigeria Limited in Ajah area of Lagos State over unsettled tax liabilities of N536m. Members of staff of the company were ordered out of the office located at Globe House, Plot 0-17B, Road 8, Victoria Garden City, Lagos. The FIRS enforcement unit, led by Anita Erinne, also sealed Meditarian Nigeria Limited at 243, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, which has a tax debt of over N4bn from 2008 to 2013, according to a statement by the agency . An official of the company, one Mr. Raja, said he was not aware of the debt and called on one Mr. Kola to attend to the FIRS team. Kola admitted that the firm owed the amount and pleaded for time to pay it. “We have been in discussions with your office in Abuja over the matter,” he said. Over 300,000 apply for 750 EFCC jobs

No fewer than 300,000 applications were received for the 750 positions advertised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, an official has said. Its Director of Public Affairs, Mr Osita Nwaja, announced the figures in Enugu when he visited the Enugu zonal office of the News Agency of Nigeria. Nwaja said that the recruitment was segmented, adding that the first phase of the exercise ended on June 26. “We had more than 300,000 applicants for the 750 positions which are in three cadres, junior, middle and senior cadres. “We are considering a whole lot of junior staff so that they will grow in the system. “The criteria were well spelt out and those that met them wrote the examination,” he said. Air strikes ‘kill at least 150’ militants fleeing Iraq’s Fallujah

Air strikes on jihadist fighters fleeing after their defeat in Fallujah have destroyed more than 260 vehicles and killed at least 150 militants, Iraqi officers said Thursday. The strikes began late Tuesday as hundreds of vehicles carrying weapons and ammunition attempted to leave the Islamic State group’s last positions west of Fallujah, the Joint Operations Command said.

Lebanese dupes three Lagos customers, absconds with N170m

Samson Folarin a Lebanese and bureau de change operator, Aly Sayad, has been accused of absconding with $487,700 (about N170m)  in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State. It was learnt that three businessmen had approached the suspect in his office on Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, to help them change $487,700 to naira. He was alleged to have left the men in the office after collecting the money, saying he was going to the bank to transfer the naira equivalent to their various bank accounts. After waiting for hours, the victims were said to have gone to the bank where Sayad claimed he was going to do the transaction, but could not find him. He was alleged to have fled with the money. The case was reported at the Bar Beach Police Division, where a manhunt was launched for the suspect. Iduoriyekemwen wins pro-Sheriff Edo PDP guber primary

Alexander Okere, Benin A former member of the Edo ‎State House of Assembly, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, has won the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial primary organised by the Ali-Modu Sheriff faction of the party at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. Iduoriyekemwen, who represented Edo in the Niger Delta Development Commission, and a member representing Egor and Ikpoba-Okha constituency in the House of Representatives, Johnson Agbonayima, had been cleared to contest the ticket of the party.‎ Voting commenced at 4:24pm, with the accredited delegates casting their ballot papers according to their respective local government areas. However, the chairman of the electoral committee, Ahmed Gulak, said Iduoriyekemwen won with a total of 481 valid votes after his opponent, Johnson Agbonayima, voluntarily stepped down.
