Assembly passes bill to regulate security groups

Samson Folarin
The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking the establishment of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.
The agency is to regulate and control the activities of security groups in the state.
The bill, which was sponsored by the Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, was passed into law after its third reading at a plenary sitting on Monday, a statement said on Tuesday.
The statement added that the bill, which was to strengthen the security structure in the state, had been sent to the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for assent.
It said the safety agency would ensure that criminals were arrested and made to account for their misdeeds.
It said, “The bill was initiated to strengthen the state security structure and activities especially at the grass-roots level. It is aimed at improving general security in Lagos State.
“Also, the bill will reduce criminal activities such as incessant cases of kidnapping, ritual killings, gang wars, domestic violence, among others, as it is expected to nip in the bud crimes at the grass-roots level.”
The statement said the move was to complement the efforts of the police and other security agencies in the state by making available relevant information on crime and suspected criminals.
