Mozia grabs second medal in Durban

Stephen Mozia continued his impressive season as he gave Team Nigeria their second medal at the ongoing 2016 CAA Senior African Athletics Championships in Durban, South Africa.
Mozia, who had on Wednesday won bronze in the shot put event, won his second bronze with a mark of 59.16m in the men’s discus event on Thursday, which was the second day of activities at the competition. The Championships will end on June 26.
South Africa’s Hogan Victor won gold with a throw of 61.68m while another South African Tucker Russell placed second with a throw of 61.44m.
Meanwhile, Gloria Asumnu failed to finish on the podium after placing fourth in the women’s 100m final with 11.45secs.
Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure won gold with a Championship Record of 10.99secs. South Africa’s Horn Carina was second in 11.07secs and another Ivorian Marie-Josee Ta Lou finished third in 11.15secs.
Also, the country’s other athletes continued their pursuit of medals in other events.Nigeria progressed to the final of the women’s 400m, which will hold on Friday.
Patience George and Regina George both finished first and second in semifinal 1 of the event. Patience ran 52.42secs while Regina ran 52.89secs to make the final.
The country’s last semifinalist, Yinka Ajayi, finished sixth in the second semifinal to crash out of the event. Ajayi ran 53.54secs to miss out of the top five qualifiers for the final.
In the men’s 400m event, only Chidi Okezie made the final of the event. He ran 45.80secs in the semifinal 2 of the event behind Botswana’s Thebe Baboloki (45.75secs) to make Friday’s final. Orukpe Erayokan and Taylor Tubotein both missed the final after finishing fourth and fifth in the semifinal 3 and semifinal 1 of the event. Erayokan ran 46.84secs while Tubotein ran 47.00secs.
Miles Ukaoma also made the final of the men’s 400m hurdles after finishing fourth in heat 2 of the event. He ran 50.79secs to make the final.
However, Team Nigeria received a boost when triple jumpers Tosin Oke and Olu Olamigoke joined the team in Durban on Wednesday. Their presence increased the country’s number to 27 athletes at the competition

Arepo: IG deploys policemen, helicopter to flush out vandals

Adelani Adepegba The acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has deployed the Tactical Operation Unit, comprising of the Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Air Surveillance Team to flush out vandals and other criminal elements operating in Arepo and Ibafo areas of Ogun State. Idris said the deployment of the unit in the areas on Thursday was to ensure that normalcy returns to them in record time. A statement on Friday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah, quoted the IG as saying that the Nigeria Police Force would not watch any criminal group(s) take law into their hands, adding that he had authorised the team to deal decisively with anyone who constitutes himself as an enemy of the state. Gunmen kill four in Kaduna village attack

Gunmen Godwin Isenyo, Kadu na Unknown gunmen on Monday evening  invaded   Gurguzu village, near  Maguzawa, an outskirts of  Rigasa in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State,  killing four persons while many persons sustained varying degrees of injuries. An eyewitness put the number of those injured at six while another source said the figure was higher than six. The incident, it was learnt, took place some minutes after 6pm on Monday, when unknown gunmen rode on bikes invaded  a farm in the village and shot the farmers. Four died on the spot. Our correspondent also gathered that the injured victims were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment. Presently, it was gathered that more than 500 people from Gurguzu village were displaced and taking refuge at a primary school in Rigasa.
