Stop lamenting, solve Benue problems, elders tell Ortom

ELDERS in Benue State have called on the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, to stop lamenting his government’s inability to meet the yearnings of the citizenry but to look for ways of proffering solutions to the problems.
At the Town Hall meeting with elders and stakeholders across the state, Ortom had lamented the challenges confronting his administration due to the economic crunch. The governor had explained that the economic recession in the country had caused untold hardship, leading to his government’s inability to pay workers’ salaries and deliver on his campaign promises.
However, elders like Chief Abuh Shuluwa, Augustine Avam, Fabian Biam and some others who spoke in Katsina-Ala and Gboko axis on Tuesday, decried the continuous lamentation of the governor, asking him to do every possible means to source funds and pay workers’ salaries. They reminded the governor that his continuous cry will not solve the problem.
Shuluwa stated, “You can deceive the younger ones, but certainly not we the elder. There is so much money in the state. There are major markets that are generating revenues for the government. What happens to revenues being generated from Logo and Zaki Biam yam markets, where between 80 and 90 trailers full of yams are sold out to people from other parts of Nigeria.”

Wimbledon: Kerber defeats Halep to make semi-final

AFP Germany’s Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber reached her second Wimbledon semi-final on Tuesday to edge closer to the world number one spot. The fourth-seeded left-hander emerged victorious over Simona Halep, the fifth seed from Romania, 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) and will face either Venus Williams or Yaroslava Shvedova for a place in Saturday’s final. IYC begs Buhari to act on his appeals to end militancy

OVIE OKPARE, WARRI The umbrella body for Ijaw youths, Ijaw Youth Council has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to act on his appeals to Niger Delta militants to halt hostilities by personally kick-starting the dialogue process with stakeholders in the region. A statement signed by the spokesman for the group, Eric Omare, on Sunday, stressed that only a genuine and serious engagement with Niger Delta people would address the recurring agitation from the people. The group which was reacting to recent appeal by the President, urging the rampaging militants to embrace and halt further attacks on oil facilities in the region, said multiplicity of new militant group was not a barrier to achieving peace if the government was sincere.
