Trump Supporters Attacked At California Rally

Donald Trump supporters leaving a rally in San Jose were punched by protesters who threw eggs, smashed car windows and set fire to the tycoon's campaign hats.

Police wearing riot gear stood their ground at first, but after 90 minutes moved in on the crowd to break it up.

At least four people were arrested on Thursday night. One officer was also assaulted, according to police Sergeant Enrique Garcia.

Video showed clashes in the street outside the San Jose Convention Center as a crowd of more than 300 protesters waved Mexican flags, chanted anti-Trump slogans and burned the hats and at least one US flag.

Some banged on vehicles as they left the rally and chased after those on foot to frighten them.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, a Democrat and supporter of Hillary Clinton, said: "At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behaviour of his campaign."

Protests have become common at Mr Trump's rallies. He was forced to abandon a rally in Chicago in March after violent clashes between supporters and protesters outside.

Mr Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, spoke for around 50 minutes at the rally, where he attacked Mrs Clinton and called a speech she made on foreign policy on Thursday "pathetic" and "sad to watch".

He vowed to stop illegal drugs coming into the US from the south and reiterated his proposal to build a wall on the US border with Mexico.
