US congressman Chaka Fattah convicted on corruption charges

Veteran US congressman Chaka Fattah has been convicted of multiple frauds which prosecutors said were aimed at enriching himself and preserving his political career.
Fattah, 59, was found guilty on 23 counts including racketeering, fraud and money laundering.
His lawyers said the schemes were run without his knowledge by two political consultants who had pleaded guilty.
Fattah, from the Democratic Party, will be sentenced on 4 October.
The 59-year-old, who has represented West Philadelphia in Congress for two decades, is one of the most senior black lawmakers in Congress.
In one case, he is said to have used cash raised for an election campaign to pay off some of his son's student debt.
Prosecutors also said he disguised a lobbyist's bribe as payment for a car he never sold.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has said the charges against Fattah were "deeply saddening".
Four of his associates were also charged, prosecutors said.
Fattah's son, Chaka Fattah Jr, is already serving a five-year term in an overlapping fraud case related to loans associated with a business he ran.

Arepo: IG deploys policemen, helicopter to flush out vandals

Adelani Adepegba The acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has deployed the Tactical Operation Unit, comprising of the Police Mobile Force, the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Air Surveillance Team to flush out vandals and other criminal elements operating in Arepo and Ibafo areas of Ogun State. Idris said the deployment of the unit in the areas on Thursday was to ensure that normalcy returns to them in record time. Gunmen kill four in Kaduna village attack

Gunmen Godwin Isenyo, Kadu na Unknown gunmen on Monday evening  invaded   Gurguzu village, near  Maguzawa, an outskirts of  Rigasa in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State,  killing four persons while many persons sustained varying degrees of injuries. An eyewitness put the number of those injured at six while another source said the figure was higher than six. The incident, it was learnt, took place some minutes after 6pm on Monday, when unknown gunmen rode on bikes invaded  a farm in the village and shot the farmers. Four died on the spot. Our correspondent also gathered that the injured victims were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.
