Ogun to check kidnappers, land grabbers’ excesses

Samuel Awoyinfa, Abeokuta
The Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, ‎has said the state assembly will partner with the executive arm to enact laws to check the excesses of land grabbers, kidnappers, armed robbers and other miscreants.
He said this in response to a request made by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olumide Ayeni, for the need to harmonise laws which bordered on land grabbing, kidnapping, armed robbery and other emerging crime in the state.
‎The Speaker who was represented by his deputy, Olakunle Oluomo, said the state was witnessing rapid development which called for the enhanced security to protect lives and property.
‎The Bill to check the land grabbers, according to him, is titled: ‘A Bill for A Law To Prohibit Forcible Entry and Occupation of a Landed Properties, Violent and Fraudulent Conducts in a Relation To Landed Properties In Ogun State And for Connected Purposes.’
He said there was urgent need to legislate against what he described as “unwarranted harassment” following the population influx being experienced in major cities in the state “due to rapid socio-economic development which had put higher demand on land resulting in increasing illegal activities of land speculators.”
According to him, the 8th legislature had “discussed, debated and passed” people-oriented Bills and Resolutions to better the lives of the teeming populace in the state.
On his own part, Ayeni said the executive was proposing to come up with similar law which borders on armed robbery, kidnapping and violent conducts which would soon be transmitted to legislature for necessary considerations
